Keep Calm Carry On Continued

Posted in Brisbane, Brisbane Floods 2011, Volunteer on January 20th, 2011 by admin

After I posted  Keep Calm Carry On sign with what I hoped would be some helpful information in my blog last week, little did I know that one of our very own HOME SAVVY team members would be a direct victim of the  damage and destruction that had been created with radical rain and flooding that we had and still are being hammered with here in Brisbane.  Not only did our lovely Raelene have  her home invaded by the flood waters to the ceiling of the lower living  area of her home but she has literally become the face of the floods.  Why???  Take a look at the picture, you’ve  probably seen this image several times already in the papers and on the telly.

Raelenes’ story is pretty typical of what many of the flood victims have and still are experiencing  here in Queensland but through all the adversity, heartache and loss she still manages put a smile on her face and count her blessings – that herself , her daughter and those in her neighborhood still have each other and continue doing exactly what the sign says KEEPing CALM and CARRYing ON.  The other reason that she CAN carry on, and this has simply astonished her, is the support that she has received from friends, family and perfect strangers – other wise known at the Gumboot Volunteers and to these people she “Thanks”  from the bottom of her heart and is immensely grateful.

And just get the job done – what ever that job may be ……

And that’s exactly what’s been happening here in Brisbane.
Friends, neighbors and strangers are all pitching in to help out in any way that they can.

Brisbane’s  Lord Mayor Campbell Newmans’  pre-election catch cry from a few years back ” CAN DO”  is very apt for all Brisbane residents at this time.  Not only are those affected directly by the floods accepting help they are moving on to help others in need before themselves.  What amazing spirit, camaraderie and great mateship.

I have been listening intently to the radio and have picked up a few tips, we may not need to use this information now but its handy to have for immediate use or future (hopefully not) events.

A couple of helpful tips that I’ve heard over the past 48 hours

No Power?? Car Chargers  for mobile phones and other items
Medications – ensure they are on hand ready to go in a waterproof bag
Insurance papers, birth Certificates, Passports etc keep in plastic ziplock folders in a secure but accessible location in case of emergency evacuations.
Freeze any excess milk / bread you may have especially with potential supply issues

Stay safe
